Once upon a time there was a drinking club at Burghley House. It was founded by The 5th Earl of Exeter in 1684 and it was called The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. It had an eclectic bunch of members: The Baptist Earl of Gainsborough was known as Greyhound, The Hon Charles Bertie was The Stag and The Earl of Denbigh was Tyger amongst other nefarious characters. We are not sure who The Bull (rumoured to be The Hon Charles Cecil) and The Swan were and nor are we sure that the club dined at this historic Stamford Public House....but it is highly likely they did. They would have drunk locally brewed ales, feasted on Burghley Estate and other local produce and created total bedlam. Things have a habit of coming round and we look forward to inviting you to dine on our local produce, sup our fine ales and obviously behave very, very well! PS Sorry - forgot to say that we have the best kept secret in Stamford –amazing bedrooms....7 of them....incredibly comfortable....great size...showers and baths and rather good value.

One of the loveliest hotels in Stamford, the Garden House is a family run hotel conveniently located next to Burghley Park and a few minutes stroll from the centre of historic Stamford. Stamford itself, for over a century labelled "the finest stone town in England", is a bustling market town serving the southwest corner of Lincolnshire and the adjacent parts of Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. Dating in part from the late seventeenth century, the hotel has retained much of its original charm to provide a haven of calm amid the hurly-burly of modern life. Notable facilities include nearly an acre of walled gardens, including private parking, free broadband wireless internet throughout the premises, a guest bar with probably the best selection of single malt whiskies in the area, and high quality dining. It has 20 en-suite bedrooms including family and four poster rooms, and all the facilities to be expected of a three star hotel. From the moment you arrive at the Garden House Hotel the emphasis is on personal service. Our staff are always on hand to offer assistance and advice on the hotel and the attractions of the town and the surrounding area.
